Morale Discussions
The Pay Rises & Their Effect on Morale post back on November 11 has generated a lot of discussion and I thought it time I revisited the issue. It seems many of you are less then happy with my original suggestion. Surprisingly the consensus is that morale needs to mean much more in the game and I am happy to take things forward on that basis.
At the moment, morale has a minimal effect on game play. This is mainly because the vast majority of managers see 18 as a low morale and therefore in a game the effects of morale become negligible. Morale is a range from 1 to 20, not 16 or 17 to 20 and any changes will need to get things back on an even keel in order to be effective.
Rather than suggest some changes, I would like to take the next couple of weeks to throw around some options here and on the Forum to see what people would like to see. Personally I would love to see morale mean much more and also for the higher morale levels to be something teams aspire to rather than a minimum level.
Things that I think could have a positive effect on morale are:
- Winning games.
- Drawing with teams above you in the league.
- Not losing away games.
- Buying good players.
- Players performing well.
While negatives could possibly be:
- Losing games.
- Not winning at home.
- Numerous team or squad changes.
- Selling good players.
- Players performing badly.
- Sendings-off.
The lists are a quick set of thoughts and their relative impacts need to be expanded, but I would be interested on your thoughts.

This is a reprint of an answer I left elsewhere that only The Corder spotted. It would take a wee bit of coding, but rather than start penalising for changes, the morale system could be completely overhauled so that the how a team plays each week, on top of the reult of the game, could affect the morale.
A calculation could be made on the effect of squad changes with a built in random factor, so changes could have a positive or negative effect on how the team played. This isn’t a figure we would ever see, although it would possibly have either a positive or negative effect on the players ratings. The reason for this first step is that some new signings have a positive effect on a team and some a negative effect.
The second stage is a calculation using the starting eleven’s ratings.
I would suggest a 5 rating counts as -2 morale, as 6 rating could be -1 morale and a 9 rating + 2 morale. and a 10 rating +3 morale.
Taking the Premier results a couple of weeks back:
Winchmore v Bambino 4-4 Winchmore 0 mc Bambino +4 mc
Olympic v Druids 2-1 Olympic +3mc Druids +1mc
ELA v Veleno 3-2 ELA +1 Veleno -1mc
Celtic Hearts v Prophets 1-1 Hearts +4 Prophets +1mc
scv v Warmington 4-3 SVC +2mc Warmington -2mc
Tormenta v Star 2-1 Tormenta +1mc Star -2mc
These resultswork out well and with the intial calculation built in, could really make morale – and a player’s ratings, mean more than if he gets a 9 rating he has a chance to go up with a run of 9s.
What do you think?
I think a combination of something Richard said and the above would work. Everyone could have say 10 morale in a scale from 1 – 20, good things happening gives you an increase, bad things means it drops and if neither happens then it slowly moves back towards the norm of 10??????
Not that i want to appear -ve but i think if you sign a good player then you get the benefit of him … u don’t need further morale bump … and you must of got rid of a good player to sign him so does this not balance out ? … or if you sign him for numerous players then this would balance out also ! … is there a real need to change morale, as the apathy to this post suggests
It seems that nobody is really bothering their arse about it Rich, I would suggest that you stop putting in the time to improve the game and forget about changing morale. Nobody cares.
I like the proposed changes but I’m not too sure about the buying/selling players… Surely that just levels itself out?
The suggestion proposed by Rich and Kennie look good to make a positive contribution to the morale.
Where I see real value in morale going up or down as players are bought and sold, is not necessarily in the skill of those players, but perhaps, we could get a hint of their hidden talents. Lets say you trade a skill 5 Def for a skill 5 attacker because you need an attacker. Lets also say that both players are releatively unknown with no IPs or previous history. But, one of them is a star of the future and the other is a bit of a duffer – there must be hidden values to represent this fact to explain why some players of the same skill level perform differently. If you buy a great player and sell a duffer, let it effect morale. How you could transfer that to real life is that players in squads can see the real potential of their team/squad mates based on what they do on the training ground etc – they will know who is a star in the making and who is good for cleaning boots. Could give us a hint of what players are worth holding onto, rather than seeing a load of skill 5′s and wondering which ones are going to be hits, rather than just who’se name we like.
For the manager, you do a simple trade and see morale go up possibly as a result, you might thing that the unkown guy you bought may just be something for the future as opposed to just being any old skill 5 to sit in the squad ready for your next big deal.
Just a thought.
I like the basic idea of what Richard has suggested as seems to cover most parts of the game and would like to see morale paying a bigger part in the game especially with a run of good or bad results as this maybe could encourage the managers who dont deal much to realise they need to make a few signings to change their luck as otherwise thay can just increase a players wages and get it back up that way which seems a unlikely way of increasing team morale!
